Yet Another Database Program Update...

I mentioned earlier, with a cheer and a sigh of relief, that Bento would be my new database. But that was before I discovered that it won't print reports, like inventory consignment lists for galleries... I get multi points from my galleries for my inventory sheets which verify what they have in stock plus the new work being brought in. I am sorely disappointed that I haven't been able to duplicate this feat without taking a few college accounting courses. It's beginning to look like my old PC will take root to the left and slightly behind my beautiful, 85% perfect iMac.

iWork's Numbers program is a spreadsheet, not a database so that's out. NeoOffice.org, the open source mac version of OpenOffice.org, has a database and I'm trying to figure out... y'know, this ceased to be a fun adventure some time ago!

Ask me if I had to do it over if I'd just get a new PC... no, don't ask.

Let me ask you... what do you use to keep track of your paintings and all the info that goes with each? File cards? Ledgers? Database? Spreadsheet? A gallery or artist inventory program? Which one?

I still use Appleworks for simple database things. I use FileMaker if I need something more capable, but it is expensive if you do not need that much capability. I had hoped that Bento would replace the database capabilities of Appleworks but, like you have pointed out, the support for printed output is terrible.

I was going to mention the Open Office software since I notice it supports Mac. However, I've never used it myself. I've just been considering what I would do if I ever switched from a PC to a Mac myself. I use Access for PC which is overkill I know.

I'm really trying to do this on the cheap... don't need big programs with all the bells and whistles. I'm more than a little disappointed with the mac options I've found so far. Not to mention the time I've had to spend weeding though them, hitting a brick wall and have to start over. So far, the database is all that's left to tame... a big project for a numbers-challenged gal like me.

i like it so far. although I probably only use a fraction of the funtions it has because I haven't had time to figure it all out.

I've been tempted to get working artist. It sounds like the way to go, but right now I'm limping along in Access. Which isn't a problem, but like you I'd like something that spits out reports and keeps up with individual gallery inventories with thumbnails to boot!

Someone suggest Flick! at http://www.arawak.com.au/ and I'm checking it out. Supposed to be able to import .csv files but I couldn't make it happen (story of my life these days.) So am entering a couple of years of data by hand to see how it works. I bought it ($29) so I could check all features... looks good but will have to figure out the import thingy. A question to the company resulted in a reply the next day... that's a good sign.

I use FileMaker Pro. Built a custom database in which I can run any type of report I want. I can easily run searches and switch between views run Consignment Inventory Lists. I've looked into eArtist and it looks like it does a lot of what my custom built database will do and last time I checked, it's only $25. Gook Luck.
