Gustav Refugees...

Gustav is to be taken seriously! It's aim, as I write this, is just west of NOLA... meaning a direct hit on my old neighborhood where my youngest and his family still live. They left before 4am, Sat morn, along with their next door neighbor family, a four car, two dogs, four cats, six kids, four adults caravan, heading for our lake house. I understand a co-worker will be joining them tomorrow. Needless to say, we'll make day trips to visit, we'll sleep better at home, thanks just the same ;-)

Made two trips down today, had to bring all kids back for a double b'day/bowling party held for the two local g-kids (their mom is the super hero today!) then make the hour drive back to the lake house to deposit them with their families. This gave the traveling adults some valued nap times as they'd spend the previous night boarding up their houses and packing freezer food.

As I'm just about home, I get a call from a good friend asking if I know of available motels that take pets... not likely at this late date! But we have plenty of room at our main house so we'll expect you and yours. Chances are they'll arrive to an empty house as we'll be with the others... promised the kids we'd take them tubing and that's not a promise they'll let us out of! But Dottie will understand, know how to settle in... and we'll be back later in the day. Just glad she called... glad we can help.

My back and forth trips on the Interstate were shared with many, many cars with Louisiana tags, plus many, many tour buses contracted for evacuation purposes plus more ambulances than I could count, headed for NOLA to evacuate hospitals and nursing homes. Lessons have been learned! I hope not soon forgotten...

Karen,
Thank goodness you have all that space available for your family and friends. This is a very scary storm. Sounds like you are making it a "good time" for the kids. The real work will come after.

Scary stuff indeed. I'm so glad you are able to keep your family and their friends safe and cozy. I hope their homes stay safe as well.

So glad to hear that you are able to get your family and friends out of harms way. I am wishing for the best for everyone affected by this storm.

I so clearly remember the events of 3 years ago and will be holding my breath for the next few days, hoping that history does NOT repeat itself.
