Abstracts Within...

SLATE - 30 x 48 - 2010

Wonder if the economy has anything to do with it... maybe people need more realism and less abstraction it their surroundings right now. In any case, my abstracted landscapes are winning the numbers games recently. Give me points for my inability to stick to one genre... hop scotching between styles and mediums as so moved.

The above painting was one of two landscapes that is out on approval at a local lawyer's new digs. The rep was almost apologetic that taking abstracts, his favs, would be a wasted effort. Apparently this is one of those paintings that shows better in person than in digital format so I cut out a detail to show that even with realism, there is plenty of room to let abstract impulses out to play.

I'm still an emerging artist and struggling to pay the bills. I too am conflicted in the studio with thoughts of "what is it that will sell?". I try to stay true to myself but, it's hard not to have that realist buyer in mind.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks all... interesting when I crop out a detail for a better view, I wind up liking the crop as a stand alone painting, but seldom follow up. When I worked on paper I did a lot of cropping. Would run a smaller mat around a not so great composition until a good one showed up ;)
