There's A Tree On Our Roof!

Last week... the way it was...

This week... the way it is...

We had a bit of wind come through last night... I woke to loud gusty sounds, house creaking a bit, occasional thumps on the roof... could hear deck furniture being stirred around, but other than one really loud SWOOSH! I wasn't too alarmed. Noted the flashing 12:00 so checked my iPhone for time and radar... saw that the bulk of the storm had already passed us so I went back to sleep. The master never stirred.

This morning I took my coffee for a walk to check the trashy limbs and leaves left behind and LO! a big tree had come down on our roof!

We now have a skylight in the garage, where our two cars are held hostage since the garage door track is disabled. Insurance and crews have been called, our work is cut out for us... so to speak. Not how we'd planned to spend the week.

So lucky! We needed a new roof anyway, the garage door is ready to be replaced... no harm to the living area (though I wouldn't have minded a kitchen upgrade, not this way!) We live in a very wooded area full of big old trees, beautiful but potentially harmful... which can be said of most anything.

Yes, we do have a NOAA radio but we seldom have it on at night because it sounds off for storms many miles away from us that would never be a threat. Until they can let me know when danger is one zip code away, we can't bring ourselves to put up with constant needless alerts. Will rely on our wits... for better or for worse.

Wow, that was a lucky one--not that you'd have chosen all this aggravation!

That's awful, but you did have someone looking out for you. Thanks be to God it didn't come thru the main roof onto your whole house!

Lots more old trees around the house will have their chance to take aim... lost two big ones last year but they fell away from the house. Can't stop stuff happening, just do our best to stay alert.

Wow, you said a tree fell, but I didn't realize it was HUGE!

At least you could have yelled stop as it made it's way to Georgia. Our area had a lot of damage, but it jumped a couple of miles over Mamma's house and by- passed ours. We were lucky, but our friend Jimmy was not. He lost his old blue pickup truck to a huge tree and the roof to his barn to the wind. He's my source for hubcaps to paint.

Looks like we took another hit at the lakehouse... part of the roof was peeled back (no leaks inside however) and a small tree tried to fall against the house but a couple of other small trees and a big camellia kept it from hitting. This should bring us up to date with weather woes... I hope!

Hey Grammie,
Glad to hear that you guys are okay. The damage reminds me of the kinds of damage that happened up here during the ice storm at the beginning of the semester. Besides the tree I hope everything else is smooth sailing for you guys. I hope to see you sometime this summer! Love you,
Lauren

Hey, Karen! I hope you replaced your roof with the sturdiest material. Your neighborhood is full of trees with thin trunks, so I guess it's safe to expect more scenarios like that in the future. Well, I think it was nature's way of helping you jumpstart your roof replacement project. You're right -- you guys better stay alert!

I know trees add a aesthetic touch to the yard, but they also pose risks if grown too close to the house. If you live in an area known for heavy storms, hurricanes or tornadoes, cutting down trees around the house decreases the risk of trees falling on the roof and crashing through your home. In addition, falling leaves can cause turn into an obstruction in your gutter system.

I agree with you, Willie! The same thing happened to our neighbor. Only it was unfortunate that their eldest daughter got directly hit by the tree as it fell over and went through their roof. She had to go under surgery. It would be nice to see the roof replacement and the other repairs made after this incident. =)
