The Mother In Me...

1970 - Clown - 30x24 - painted for the baby's room

Long before there was art, there was motherhood... at least in our house. Another war in another place left me and the kids a lot of 'bonding time'... in remote areas, that's also known as cabin fever. So I set about learning how to paint and the older two sort of grew up looking over my shoulder ("Why do you get to stay home and play and we have to go to school?" "Because you get to paint all those neat pictures in school and I want to, too!" ) I was just getting a handle on it when number three appeared... a little later than originally planned, but that's okay. For the record, thirty years with kids in the house, the majority of it with the kitchen sharing studio space. It's a wonder I didn't poison us all! Life eventually settled into a more family oriented routine when the dad was in residence more, but the painting thing was now a habit that had to be fed. I love my family for giving me the time and space, not to mention the respect, to keep it going.

For Mother's day... an ode to my three:

I love you the most because you were my firstborn. You taught me how to be a mom through considerable trial and error, but you made it easy and you made me look good.

I love you the most because you were my only little girl. You can't imagine how often I look at you and see myself. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I cry... I won't tell you which or when.

I love you the most because you were my baby and you always will be. You grew up as I knew you would, but I keep wondering: Who are you and what have you done with my little boy?

The last verse made me cry,

What lovely things to say to your children, though I suspect they know this already. AAB

Been having these thoughts in my head since way back... prepared in case I was asked that dreaded question of who I loved the most. Don't recall that anyone asked.

What a beautiful thing to do, and to share. I love the last one too!! That one could work for all three of mine.

Thanks Mom, I knew I was the favorite! (sticks tongue out at Julia & Jon then runs away knowing they can probably both kick my butt these days!) :)

Geeze, Joe! (How often have you heard THAT?) Don't go stirring trouble ;-)

Oh yeah, you had me in tears too, that is beautifully written and very heartfelt. Then I read the one from Joe and laughed--kids do cut right through any sentimentality on mom's part don't they??

Joe, get serious, we've always known I was the favorite. Who do you think they picked to live near!

Trouble, consider yourself stirred!
